Self: Sometimes in Silence

Sometimes in silence
we hear tenderness.
The breath of a loved one,
gentle, warm, and reassuring.

Sometimes in silence
we hear awkward confusion.
The fumbling nervousness
of a first encounter.

Sometimes in silence
we hear disapproval.
The grim line of lips
pressed together in disappointment.

Sometimes in silence
we hear disinterest.
No investment offered, no desire
for any return.

Sometimes in silence
we hear anger,
heated and viscious,
a burning whip lashing against bare flesh.

Sometimes in silence
we are left to wonder just what it is
we are supposed to hear.

Perhaps the truth is
we are not supposed to hear
anything.
