I dreamt I woke you
Wide awake, sitting up in bed,
I dreamt I woke you,
my heart whispering secrets I was not ready to tell.
Secrets you were not prepared to hear.
Caught in your gaze, my throat tightened,
closing in on itself
strangling me with thoughts
that scrambled a hasty retreat,
too many all at once.
And then the day dawned.
And you were still sleeping,
still peacefully resting there beside me.
I watched your head on the pillow.
I studied your chest as it rose and fell,
steady, calm, my own breathing falling
into that deep rhythm with yours.
